The 5W We Were All Taught… But One Powerful Element Was Missing
Most of us grew up learning that to start any conversation or write anything meaningful, we must begin with the 5Ws + How:
What, When, Where, Why, Who, and How.
A perfect formula — at least that’s what our teachers told us.
And honestly, it does help.
It sharpens clarity, improves thinking, and builds a strong foundation for research and communication.
For anyone chasing a scientific or analytical career, this is the first doorway into the world of exploration.
But here’s the truth nobody told us…
There is one critical element missing from this entire framework.
Feeling.
You can answer all the 5Ws and still fail to connect.
You can explain “what” and “how,” but if the message carries no emotional depth, people don’t remember it — and they don’t act on it.
Whether you’re
• leading a team,
• presenting a strategy,
• writing content, or
• solving a problem…
The “Feeling” behind your message is what turns information into impact.
Think of Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle
Most people start with What.
Some reach How.
Very few begin with Why —
and even fewer communicate with Feeling, the emotional energy behind that “Why.”
Feeling is what creates trust.
Feeling is what builds connection.
Feeling is what transforms an average professional into an inspiring leader.
So here’s the strategy: 5W + How + Feeling
Next time you write, speak, pitch, or lead:
✔ Ask “What am I saying?”
✔ Ask “Why does it matter?”
✔ But also ask…
“How do I want people to feel after this?”
That one question changes everything.
Because when information meets emotion,
Communication becomes influence.
Leadership becomes inspiration.
And success becomes sustainable.
